Just a quick PSA before what I hope will be a beautiful weekend: it’s come to my attention that there’s a company out there called Record Transfer Services that’s sending official-looking “bills” to people who have recently transferred property. With just a quick Google search, I found that this company has been the subject of many complaints in several states. (See the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel and Realtor.com.) This is a scam! Several states are aware of this and according to the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General of Illinois filed suit against the company in 2013.
If you’re interested in looking at your deed, or that of any of your neighbors, you can usually search your registry of deeds online for free. For New Hampshire properties, visit www.NHDeeds.com. For Massachusetts properties, visit www.masslandrecords.com. And if you get suspicious mail, a quick Google search could save you money and aggravation.
